Does the Forestry for the Bay program replace other programs already underway in the watershed?
No! The Forestry for the Bay program is intended to serve as an "on-ramp" for members to quickly access the other programs, groups, and activities going on in their area. Don't spend countless hours searching the web... join Forestry for the Bay to take advantage of the work we've already done for you.
Doesn't managing my land mean I have to cut trees?
Maybe. Managing your landscape is based on your goals and objectives. Different goals and objectives require different practices. If your goals include increasing wildlife habitat elements, enhancing forest growth and health, or generating revenue from your land, then a sustainable harvest may be the solution.
Isn't cutting trees a bad thing?
Not at all; trees are an amazingly diverse resource. They can provide a wide variety of services including habitat, recreation, water filtration, air "scrubbing," and, when harvested sustainably, forest products. A careful harvest, under the supervision of a forester, can help achieve your goals and objectives, insure minimal impact to the forest, insure good forest regeneration, improve forest health, and provide the forest products (like lumber, cardboard, toilet paper) that we all use everyday!
How can Forestry for the Bay help me?
By enrolling in the Forestry for the Bay program, you will be coached through a conservation planning process to create a plan for your land. Like the blueprints to building a house, a good conservation plan will provide you with a tool for helping to determine the goals for your land and how to best achieve them.
